Penny Dreadful Episode Two: Séance
June 28, 2014
And I am back with Episode 2 of Penny Dreadful. (Pilot episode post here). This episode is full of really beautiful quotes and character interactions, awesome acting from Eva Green (no wonder so many people refer to PD as The Eva Green Show), many shots of Victor Frankenstein smiling, a glimpse on Billie Piper as Brona Croft and Reeve Carney as Dorian Gray, Frankenstein’s Proteus, and so much more!
I screencapped (is there such a word? :P) like crazy so about a hundred pictures and really long text randoms are here under the cut! 🙂 Should you decide to use the pictures, please give me a link to your posts / artwork 🙂
Here we see Victor genuinely happy and acting like a Father to his new born (???) creature, Proteus. I see them both as a Master and his pet, though. Really adorable relationship, you two. :3
Oh and Proteus got his name from Shakespeare, which is not surprising at all.
“Nice meeting you, too.”
“What does it mean?”
First meeting of Ethan Chandler and Brona Croft. I wonder why he got so interested. Is it because he can relate to her? Or she finds her pretty? Or because of her strong Irish accent? I’m a bit confused but I am not complaining. 😀 Ethan didn’t appear that much in this episode, but whenever he’s in a scene, it just makes me really happy??? idek.
Here we see Vanessa writing *those* letters. You’ll learn more about it in Episode 5: Closer Than Sisters. 🙂 Anyway, Sir Malcolm walked in and told her, “He’s here. Unbutton the top of your dress.” Apparently he was talking about Dr. Frankenstein, who, unlike most of us, didn’t show any interest in Ms. Ives.
“A man does not only live in the empirical world. We must seek the ephemeral… Or why live?”
“If this belief from heaven be sent,
If such be Nature’s holy plan…
Have I not reason to lament
What man has made of man?”
But, this happened. When they were examining the corpse, Vanessa saw one of Victor’s books and concluded that he was fascinated by Romantic Poetry. They both recited a poem, and bam! Instant connection. Shipping them already~ 🙂
You are very cute, Doctor :3
“What was all that poetry?”
“Our young Doctor has a secret.”
I don’t understand where did that come from, but it must be because of the verses they recited a while ago or it’s just a feeling… I don’t know. Am I missing something here?
Love how Sir Malcolm sound like a protective father in that scene though.
Meet Dorian Gray!!! So this is the job that Brona was referring to as his sideline work… Wondering how they will tweak this version of Dorian Gray. I adore Reeve Carney!
He looked so bored! It all changed when Brona coughed a lot of blood and she finally caught his attention, knowing that she has consumption.
So Dorian Gray has fetish for…dying people? Or death in general? See, I haven’t read the novel and had to rely on a Wiki summary for the story so I’m not so sure if my facts are straight 😀
Ladies and Gentlemen, Reeve Carney’s hot hot hot body. I’m sorry. I had to. 😀
I’ve never fucked a dying creature before. Do you feel things more deeply, I wonder. Do you feel pain?
Then she coughed up blood AGAIN, covering Dorian’s face with her blood. But he was more aroused than ever. Good god, who is this man?
But for a moment there, I thought, is he too numb to feel anything? Is he jealous that some people can feel more deeply because he doesn’t know how to… feel?
Is this London’s version of a sex video / pornography during that time?
Let me appreciate Victor’s cleft chin first in this shot.
Proteus was singing while Victor was drawing him and he said something about the sins we have all committed, things that will cause us shame. He looked terribly sad afterwards and Proteus, being the adorable person (?) he is, gave Victor a glass of water.
So sweet, this guy!
Vanessa Ives looking perfect in Madame Kali’s party. I didn’t know that women wear sleeveless dresses already in the 18th Century? :O Enlighten me.
First meeting of Dorian and Vanessa and my poor heart is fluttering~ ♥ I think Eva Green looked more mature for Reeve Carney but their chemistry is so incredible… I can’t even. Reeve looked like an early twenties frat boy with that hair and accessories. Haha.
Like what I said earlier, I had no idea who Dorian Gray is before this show. I haven’t even watched the Dorian Gray movie with Ben Barnes. So I don’t fully understand why so many people complain that Reeve is not fit for the role, that his hair is ugly (WHAT.), that the way he carries himself is so not Dorian Gray. To be honest, I don’t care. All I know is that I find him charming, youthful, and beautiful. And I think his interpretation of this character works as far as I’m concerned.
Sizzling hot chemistry, I must say.
Dying because look at the way they look at each other!!!!! One moment I was shipping Vanessa with Victor, but now that he’s with Dorian, I just can’t resist. He’s supposed to be that kind of guy, right? Irresistible?
And then, the wife of Ferdinand Lyle (Egyptian hieroglyphics translator? XD) called them to summon spirits. But the spirits used Vanessa’s body instead. This moment is so well done and at this point, Eva Green has established that this really is her show.
And then she (as Peter, Malcolm’s son) started singing. Now we discover how his only son died during their expedition in Africa.
“You knew I was dying, didn’t you, Father? Did you name a mountain after me?”
I commend Timothy Dalton’s face all throughout this scene. His acting was so subtle yet so heartbreaking. It just hits you right on the spot. He didn’t need to go overboard but you can feel all the emotions. I swear I can even feel his heavy breathing from the screen of my laptop.
I’m not sure what Dorian was thinking and I can’t read his expressions as well. Was he scared? Or curious? Will he still ask her out even after this? LOL.
Her voice in this scene!!!
Sir Malcolm’s face changed from being heartbroken to angry, confused, and full of revenge. So far. all we know about him is that he is an explorer who lost his son in one of his expeditions, his daughter was taken away by an unknown creature, and that’s basically it. Not sure what her relationship with Vanessa really is after this. Not sure who Sembene is to him either.
I have no words for Eva Green’s acting. Give her all the awards!!!!
Pretty much what we all looked like while watching Eva Green being so perfect in this scene.
Vanessa stormed off after the possession happened, went out in the rain, made out and had sex with a random stranger (lucky guy!) who happened to pass by that dark alley while Dorian Gray was watching them closely. Stalker!!! Is that Vanessa already? Or is the evil spirit still with her?
Ethan and Brona flirting are so cute, you can’t help but love them. Ethan is very much charmed by Brona, and he finally asked her out for dinner. They were adorable but let’s not forget the fact that she is dying!
The Egyptian myth was explained further. I didn’t understand fully when I first watched it lol. Now things are much clearer.
Victor brought Proteus outside his room for the first time and taught him so many new things. Proteus was so excited about everything he hears and sees! Not sure if he’s like a kid, or an adorable puppy :3
Here’s Proteus looking cute eating chestnuts :3
…and looking out into the sun. Something good must be coming, right?
Victor, fairy lights!
Proteus saw a boat nearby and started reciting parts of the boat and then he said the word wife. Victor was startled. Proteus was beginning to remember his past life.
“Victor, tell me, what am I?”
This is such an emotional scene. We never learned how Victor got hold of Proteus’ body, where he got him, what his background is, etc. But he started to remember everything and Victor’s face looked like he was so afraid to lose his new found pet friend.
Their moment was cut short when Ethan and Brona came and greeted them.
“How do you do? My name is Mister Proteus.”
He even offered her chestnuts!
“Enjoy the fairy lights.”
“I always do.”
Aaaand many shots of Ethan and Brona being perfect, adorable, and cute human (?) beings 😀 Very OTP material!
Another shot of Victor smiling AGAIN. This Victor is so much different from the one we saw in the first episode, yes? Here, he was explaining to Proteus what friends meant. He said that Ethan and Brona were merely acquaintances. Friends are someone you spent a lot of time with, who are close to you. Proteus addressed Victor as his friend, thus the smile.
“Will I have many?”
“If you’re lucky.”
“I shall have ten. More than ten if we…”
And then Proteous was split into two!!!!!!
Leaving Victor dumbfounded, scared, crying. And Proteus, dead. Beyond repair (I hope not!). Proteus instantly became a fan favorite and yet in less than an hour, they killed him!!!! Why 🙁
Your first-born has returned… Father.
Who the hell is this guy? So Proteus is NOT Frankenstein’s monster after all? But he was so sweet and kind and selfless. He ended up in such a horrible, horrible fashion I can’t stop thinking about it.
This episode revealed more than what was shown to us in the pilot. Here, there were subtle hints about Ethan’s past, Dorian’s mysterious character, and of course, Vanessa’s troubles with the devil. It’s still too slow for most people, but the pacing is just enough for me. They showed us the relationship between Sir Malcolm and his children, and also revealed the fact that Brona is dying.
Watching only two episodes, I can say that the best endings of every episode goes to this show! You can’t help but ask for more. So many questions still boggles my mind! When will our questions be answered? The finale is on Monday already!!! *ugly sobbing*
Did you guys liked the second episode as much as I did?
