Asian Dramas 2016 Part 1

It’s already July but I still can’t believe we’re past the middle of the year! Time to recap some of the dramas I watched for the first half of 2016 πŸ™‚ Funny how I thought I watched a lot already, but this is actually less than my goal. I’ll try to catch up on the second half!

In my defense, I also watch anime and US TV series, as well as read mangas and books. Haha, excuses, excuses. Anyway, here it is! πŸ™‚ I divided this list into three groups — Completed (watched until the last episode) On-Going (currently watching) Dropped (stopped watching / still thinking about whether to continue this or not)

By the way, please add me on My Drama List so we can fangirl together! <3

Mars – Tada Kimi wo Aishiteru (Japan)

Of course I have to watch this because Mars (Taiwan) is my favorite drama of all time. But I can’t seem to find subbed episodes (I watched the first one RAW!) and last I heard, the subber stopped subbing for a while. I might pick this up someday. I’m curious how Japan will make their own version especially since this one’s based on a manga.

The Way We Were (Taiwan)

I blogged about this before and that was the time when I still like the drama. I stopped on episode 4 (too early I know!) but I just can’t stand the characters already, especially the lead guy! And I HATE the time jump! I thought we’re going to see one summer a year, but fast forwarding everything for ten years? Nope. Not interested. I thought it will be my Taiwanese Reply 1997, but I was so, so wrong. I read the recaps until the last episode tho and I must say, thank God I didn’t continue this drama! If there’s any consolation, the OST is amazing, especially Let’s Not Be Friends Anymore by Eric Chou!

Signal (Korea)

So many people on my twitter time line are raving about this drama and when I saw the 9.3 rating on MDL, I was sold. That’s a reaaaally high score! I watched the pilot episode, and well, I realized how shallow I am. LOL. Or maybe I’m just not in the mood? I admit I’m a big RomCom fan and anything outside that genre will automatically be not my type. Haha. But I think I will miss out a lot if I don’t watch this, yes?

White Christmas (Korea)

I downloaded this when I was looking for short dramas, haha. I was in the mood for something light back then so I don’t know why I ended up watching this. It felt too heavy for me but I’d probably watch the rest of the episodes later. It’s only 8 episodes long, by the way!

Limit (Japan)

I liked it, but I didn’t love it for one reason alone– I expected something like Battle Royale but of course they are incomparable. Haha! I discovered Masataka Kubota because of this drama so I will be looking forward for his next projects. I blogged about this along with other Japanese dramas here.

Kamisama Mou Sukoshi Dake (Japan)

Aww, back then, dramas with terminal illnesses were the most popular right? LOL. This wasn’t the best / saddest love story that I watched but the cast is captivating especially our leads– Fukada Kyoko and Takeshi Kaneshiro. I have to mention Nakama Yukie as well! The cast is superb and can I just say they were all eye candies albeit the horrible 90s fashion and makeup? Heeee. I think this made me a fan of Fukada Kyoko. Do I recommend this? For the cast, yes. And it’s a classic so you’d expect all the cliches but it’s worth it. Especially because of the hotness of the leads, so much chemistry! To think Kyoko is only 16 or 17 when they filmed this and Kaneshiro is in his mid-20s. Just wow.

In Time With You (Taiwan)

I might have ranted about this a lot but looking back, it’s a pretty good drama. Maybe the reason why I disliked the last few episodes was because of Li Da Ren’s (Chen Bo Lin) indecisiveness? Or maybe I think You Qing (Ariel Lin) is such a great female lead that the guy doesn’t actually deserve someone as awesome as her? Maybe that’s just me. I know a lot of people who LOVED this so I’d still recommend it. Heeee.

Descendants of the Sun (Korea)

If you haven’t heard about this drama and Song Joong Ki, I’ll assume you must be living under a rock? Haha. This is probably the most famous drama this 2016, up to now I still can’t believe the hype! Well, it’s Song Hye Kyo. I already “know” her even when I wasn’t into KDramas yet. And Song Joong Ki, apparently, is every woman’s dream guy. LOL. I love them and the drama but it wasn’t as perfect or as amazing as others would say. Haha. I’m not badmouthing the drama, I’m just saying, manage your expectations πŸ˜‰

Personally, I liked the second leads better! I think they were the most amazing ones from the bunch, and the most brilliantly-acted roles as well. Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won’s chemistry made me fall in love with them ❀︎ I love the OST too, I still listen to it once in a while πŸ™‚

As for the story, it’s not as deep as you think. Haha. I don’t think there is an actual plot to be honest. LOL. I am also not a big fan of the soldiers arc but I did enjoy the doctors’ storylines πŸ™‚ Aaaah, I miss the characters! The drama is definitely flawed but the characters are more than enough for you to really appreciate this drama. So many eye candies, you will not be disappointed!

Cheese in the Trap (Korea)

I thought this will be my favorite drama this year (more on that later) because of my CITT posts when I was still watching it, haha. I even made my first MV because that’s how much I loved it– the story (college setting!), the characters, the music, everything. When the first half of the drama is that good, you’d expect something better in the next episodes right? So many fans were disappointed because it was not faithful to the manhwa but I actually liked it. There’s just something missing that I can’t really point out but overall, I was satisfied. I’m not as mad as the other fans too. Plus this introduced me to Seo Kang Joon (hi header!) so why would I even complain? πŸ™‚ Though I think that’s one of the reasons why fans were angry. They felt like the producers paid more attention to SKJ vs. Park Hae Jin. That’s sad but it’s not even their fault πŸ™

Oh well, at least our female lead, Kim Go Eun is adorable all throughout the series. She’s my peg at the moment, haha! Watch it for the second leads too, Nam Joo Hyuk did a great job here! Forget his role in School 2015 already πŸ˜‰

Bromance (Taiwan)

Ahhh, Bromance what will I do without you? Heee. I enjoyed this drama waaaay more than I expected, I loved all the characters, the story, the soundtrack (new fan of Bii! πŸ˜› Please listen to all the songs!!!), etc. Lengthy post here! πŸ™‚

We all know how Taiwanese Dramas tend to be exaggerated but I think they’ve improved quite a lot. Bromance is different from all the other Tw RomComs I watched because the characters felt very real to me. This drama made my heart skip a bit multiple times and I feel like my day is incomplete if I wasn’t able to watch a single episode for the day. Sigh. And the family storyline is my favorite in this drama, my heart swells just thinking about it. It’s a drama where I cared enough for all the characters and not just the OTP. It’s one of my favorite dramas ever and will now hold a special place in my heart ❀︎ I was surprised why I haven’t checked Megan Lai and Baron Chen’s projects before!

Please Love the Useless Me (Japan)

I’m currently reading the manga (Dame na Watashi ni Koishite Kudasai) and I like it a lot. I don’t usually laugh out loud while reading but this one made me stop for a while just to laugh, hahaha. The live action version is nothing short of awesome too. I think Dean Fujioka as Shunin is perfect. Kyoko, too! Every time they argue, my heart just goes doki-doki. So, so cute. The manga is still better, but seeing Dean as Shunin, ack. SWOONS.

Taisetsu na Kotowa Subete Kimi Ga Oishiete Kureta (Japan)

I think this is the most realistic drama I’ve seen in a while. I love all the emotions I felt while watching this drama. I was in pain with the characters, I was in love with them as well. I wanted everyone to be happy too. Erika Toda, Miura Haruma, and Takei Emi portrayed their roles really well. The topic is a bit mature and I can relate to the drama’s theme especially since I am almost the same age as the leads. This is the first Erika Toda drama that I liked her (used to hate her!!), I was rooting for her character the whole time. I’m so glad this drama ended the way it did. πŸ™‚ Good job!

Never Let Me Go (Japan)

I stopped watching when the subs were not available but will finish this. I loved the American version but surprisingly, it didn’t make me cry! Hopefully this one will be better and maybe I’m biased but it’s Ayase Haruka so I know this will be goood. Currently on episode 5!

Tokyo Dogs (Japan)

Mizushima Hiro, Yoshitaka Yuriko, AND Oguri Shun in one drama?! HECK. Why didn’t I watch this sooner? I’m on episode 6 and it’s pretty interesting! However, like what I mentioned earlier, if it’s not Romance, I’m not that big of a fan πŸ˜› But the main leads are some of my favorite Japanese actors so I can’t miss this!

Another Miss Oh (Korea)

OMG OMG OMG OMG. How do I start?

I just devoured all sixteen episodes of this drama the whole week and I am in love. SO IN LOVE. This is definitely my favorite drama this 2016 even though I haven’t even finished it yet! I think about this drama when I do other things, like when I’m at work, or when I watch other shows, I even day dream about it. HAHAHAHA I must be crazy.

I find it weird that I fell so in love with a drama with older actors as leads. School dramas will always be my weakness, but this one just pulls all the heartstrings right from the first minute of the first episode. I love the OST, I avoid Social Media as much as I can because, spoilers. I was spoiled a bit (whoever you are, I HATE YOU! That detail is CRUCIAL!!!) but it didn’t stop me from enjoying this drama. If I enumerate why I love this drama, this part alone will be much longer than the actual post. Haha! So promise, I’ll make a separate post.

Ahhh, Eric Mun. I love you. Park Do-Kyung, stop making me cry. Oh Hae Young, I love you too. I just want everyone to be happy in the finale. I’m saving all my feelings later. This drama might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I LOVE it so so so much, I almost cry every episode, no kidding.

Will finish the rest and will update this by the end of the year, hopefully!
